Transportation in Athens: how to get from Athens airport to the city centre

One of the things to consider when organizing a trip to a new destination is how to get from the airport to the city center.

Athens Airport (Athens International Airport – Eleftherios Venizelos) is located about 20km outside the city.

In Athens, as in other European capitals, although the airport is quite far from the city center, there are several options to get around: by metro, bus, taxi or rental car.

What you will find in this post:

By metro

The metro is the most popular option for travelers to get from the airport to the center of Athens.

At the Eleftherios Venizelos airport, there is a metro station two minutes walk from the arrivals terminal, right in front of the departures terminal.

If you search on Google Maps how to get from the arrivals terminal to the nearest metro station, it will tell you that it is a 15-minute walk (1.2 km), but that isn’t true.

When you leave the arrivals terminal you have to cross the street, walk a few meters to the left and take the escalator. As you go up the stairs you will see a sign that says “To trains & Long-Term Parking (P3)”.

That’s it! It takes 2 minutes.

The metro connects the airport with several areas of the city and the most used stop by tourists is Syntagma on the M3 line.

The M3 line is the blue one and goes directly from the airport to Syntagma Square. This is one of the main metro stations in Athens and both the blue and red lines pass through it, so you can change trains if you need to.

In addition, the Syntagma station also connects with many bus lines and some tram lines.

The metro leaves the airport every 30 minutes and the trip to Syntagma station lasts about 40 minutes. Metro tickets can be bought at the airport’s metro station and cost €10 one way.

The Athens metro is open from 5:30 am to 00:30 am and on Friday and Saturday nights lines 2 and 3 close at 2:30 am.

By bus

There are several express bus lines connecting Athens Airport to the city center. These buses run 24 hours a day and have a frequency of 15-20 minutes depending on the season.

The bus trip from the center of Athens to the airport takes about 45 minutes and the ticket price is €6 per trip.

BE CAREFUL! The bus tickets cannot be bought inside the bus but must be purchased before boarding, at one of the ticket kiosks.

The express lines connecting Eleftherios Venizelos Airport to the center of Athens are:
